For any emergency, dial 9-1-1. To join Sûreté du Québec for our citizens is 819-868-3666.

It is very important that civic addresses be easily visible from the road so that the appropriate services can reach their destination without delay in an emergency.

The Municipality of Ogden is served by the Régie incendie Memphrémagog Est. The main fire station is located at 425 rue Dufferin in Stanstead. An auxiliary station, located on chemin North Derby (Beebe sector), also serves Ogden residents.

When the fire danger rating is high, no fire permits will be issued. The fire danger rating is provided by the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU). Please note, however, that a burning ban issued by the Stanstead fire chief takes precedence over the SOPFEU danger indicator.

A fire permit is required for open-air fires and fireworks. You can obtain one by calling 873-389-5886.

Here are the articles that deal with outdoor fires under the new regulations.

ARTICLE 49 – CONDITIONS TO BE MET FOR OPEN-AIR FIRES (see definition, article 4, B.)

It is prohibited for any person to light, cause to be lit, permit to be lit, or attend an open-air fire, unless a permit has been obtained from the competent authority. In addition, anyone lighting an open-air fire must meet the following conditions:

A. Have the authorization or have received a permit from the competent authority;
B. Any outdoor fire is prohibited when the flammability index announced by the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPEU) for the Estrie region is high, very high or extreme;
C. Keep a responsible adult on site at all times;
D. Have the necessary equipment near the fire at all times to prevent any spread of fire;
E. Keep the fire under control at all times;
F. Do not use flammable liquid (gasoline or other) to light or boost the fire;
G. Do not light or keep lit any fire if the wind speed exceeds 20 km/h;
H. No flammable liquid may be located near the fire;
I. Ensure that smoke and ashes do not spread;
J. The fire must be extinguished before the person responsible leaves the premises;
K. Do not use any of the following materials as fuel: plastics of any kind, tires or other rubber-based materials, any construction/demolition waste, hazardous or polluting products, hydrocarbons, household garbage, refuse, varnished or painted wood, or any other product whose burning is prohibited by municipal and provincial laws and regulations, etc.

ARTICLE 50 – RECREATIONAL FIRES

Open-air fires contained in a prefabricated outdoor fireplace sold by retailers or of homemade construction, that has an adequate physical barrier (spark arrestor or protective screen), of maximum dimensions of 27 cubic feet (ft³) (3 feet X 3 feet X 3 feet), resting on a crushed-stone base and not attached to a building, that complies with the installation standards set out in article 51, and whose smoke does not disturb neighbours, are permitted and no permit is required.

ARTICLE 51 – INSTALLATION STANDARDS FOR OUTDOOR FIREPLACES

The installation of a fireplace referred to in article 50 must comply with the following minimum distances in order to be compliant:

A. 5 metres (m) from a main building;
B. 5 metres (m) from an accessory building;
C. 3 metres (m) from a property line;
D. 3 metres (m) from any shrubs or trees

Since the Fire Safety Risk Coverage Plan came into force in April 2008, all municipalities in the MRC Memphrémagog have been required by the Minister of Public Security to periodically visit all properties within their territory, whether residential, commercial, agricultural, public or industrial1. The purpose of this inspection visit is to identify the risks associated with each property and to optimize fire prevention. The fire department serving our municipality will thus be better prepared to respond, and prevention efforts will help eliminate fire risks at their source in our territory.

1 Most residences are classified as “low risk” and only require a visit every five (5) years. Industrial, commercial, agricultural and public properties may be visited more frequently depending on the risk classification.

The Municipality notifies in writing all citizens whose property is to be visited, approximately two to three weeks before the visits begin. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
